How to open a Terraria server to friends without a public IP

Since app version 1.2.0

Create a Terraria server in ProximaClient with a public tunnel and send your friends its address: they enter the address and the port separately in the game. The app downloads the server by itself.

Steps

  1. Start creating the server as on "Create a game server": pick Terraria and, at the "Build" step, the version in "Terraria version".
  2. At the "Setup" step, tick "Create a public tunnel for this server" and set the "World name", "World size", "Difficulty" and, if you like, the "Seed". These are set once, when the world is created. The "Journey" difficulty lets in only characters created in Journey mode.
  3. Click "Start server", and when the installation is done, "Start". If "A component needs to be installed" appears, click "Install (requires administrator rights)" and allow the changes: without this Windows component the server won't start.

Check it: after the start, the tunnel's external address appears in the server header, for example 203.0.113.10:41234.

If installing the component didn't work, the app says what to do: "Installation cancelled…" — click "Install" again and allow the changes; "Another Windows installation is in progress…" — wait for it to finish; "Couldn't install…" — try again or install the component from the Microsoft website.

How friends join the server

Friends choose joining by IP in Terraria and enter the address and the port in separate fields: first the part before the colon (203.0.113.10), then the number after it (41234). Their game version must match the server's. If it doesn't work, open "Friends can't connect".

Worlds and the server version

  • A new world: on the "Worlds" tab, click "Create world", set it up and click "Create". The world becomes the starting one, and the server generates it at the next start. "Launch this world" makes another ready world the one that starts.
  • A new server version: on the "Launch options" tab, in the "Server version" block, click "Update to …" while the server is stopped. Before the update the app copies the worlds to the server folder .proxima/backups/before-update: an updated world can't be opened in the old version. Friends need the same new game version.

If you run a Terraria server yourself, open a TCP tunnel to its port, usually 7777 (TCP or UDP).

Create a TCP tunnel to localhost:7777, as on the start page.
