How to set up voice chat on a Minecraft server

Create a second tunnel for voice, UDP to the mod's port, and put its address into the mod's settings: the server's tunnel carries only the game, while Simple Voice Chat and PlasmoVoice send voice over UDP to a port of their own.

The server needs the voice mod or plugin, and every player needs the mod.

Simple Voice Chat

  1. Start the server with the Simple Voice Chat mod once so the mod creates its settings file. It takes voice on port 24454.
  2. In ProximaClient, open "Tunnels" and click "Create tunnel" (if you already have tunnels, it's the "+" button above the list).
  3. Set "Protocol" to UDP, enter localhost:24454 in "Destination address" and click "Create tunnel".
  4. Once the tunnel connects, copy its address with the "Copy public address" icon, for example 203.0.113.10:52817.
  5. In the server folder, open config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties (on Paper, plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties) and put the address on the voice_host line: voice_host=203.0.113.10:52817.
  6. Restart the server.

PlasmoVoice

  1. Install the PlasmoVoice plugin on a server running the Paper or Purpur core (how to install plugins) and restart the server: the plugins/PlasmoVoice/config.toml file appears.
  2. In ProximaClient, create a UDP tunnel to a free port, for example localhost:25566. The game port, 25565, won't do: the server's tunnel is already open on it, and the app won't create a second tunnel to the same port.
  3. Once the tunnel connects, copy its address, for example 203.0.113.10:30335.
  4. In config.toml, in the [host] block, put the port from the tunnel's "Destination address", not the external one: port = 25566. The value 0, the game port, doesn't work through a tunnel.
  5. Remove the # from the lines of the [host.public] block and enter the tunnel's external address: ip = "203.0.113.10" and port = 30335.
  6. Restart the server.

The ports in [host] and [host.public] differ, and that's how it should be: on the free plan the tunnel's external port is assigned automatically.

Check it

The voice tunnel is one more tunnel next to the server's: if your plan doesn't allow that many at once, the server starts without its tunnel; see the tunnel limit.

Ask a friend to join the server and say something in voice chat: if you hear each other, voice works through the tunnel. If not, check that the voice tunnel was created with the UDP protocol, that the player has the mod, and that the server was restarted after the settings change. If the voice tunnel's address changes, put in the new one and restart the server again.
