How to test a service or a game on a slow connection

Since app version 1.4.0

Turn on "Network slowdown" for a tunnel: ProximaClient caps the speed, adds a delay and, for UDP, losses, as on a bad connection. The slowdown works on a tunnel of any type: HTTPS, TCP and UDP. Turning it on takes the Pro or Ultra plan; turning it off works on any.

Steps

  1. In "Tunnels", pick a running tunnel.
  2. In the tunnel's header, next to "Slowdown", click "off". The "Network slowdown" window opens.
  3. Turn on the "Network slowdown" switch.
  4. In "To the visitor, kbit/s" and "From the visitor, kbit/s", set a speed cap each way, up to 1,000,000. Empty or 0 means no cap.
  5. In "Delay from … to … ms", set a delay from 0 to 10,000 ms. With only "from" filled in, the delay is fixed; with both bounds, every packet waits a delay of its own from that range.
  6. For a UDP tunnel, set in "UDP loss, %" what share of packets is lost, from 0 to 100. TCP and HTTPS lose no bytes.
  7. Click "Apply". The app says "Slowdown applied", and the tunnel's header shows the delay instead of "off", for example "200 ms", and with no delay the speed cap, such as "up to 1000 kbit/s", or the loss.

To turn the slowdown off, switch it off and click "Apply": the app says "Slowdown turned off". "Reset" puts the last applied values back into the window.

How the slowdown acts

  • The delay is added each way: a request and its answer arrive two delays later in all.
  • The speed cap is shared by all of the tunnel's visitors.
  • It acts at once, on connections already open too, and stays when the tunnel reconnects. Closing the tunnel or signing out turns it off.
  • With a delay range, UDP packets may arrive in another order than they were sent, while TCP and HTTPS keep their order.

On the free plan, when you turn the slowdown on or change its values, "Go Pro" stands in place of "Apply". When the Pro or Ultra plan ends, a slowdown that is on stops acting, and the window says "The slowdown is on but does not act…": renew the plan or turn the slowdown off.

Check

Open the tunnel's link or connect to the server through its address: answers come two delays later, and a large page or file loads no faster than the speed cap.
